First Article Inspection (FAI) Ballooning and Characteristic Extraction Workflow

Accelerating Time-to-Market for Critical Flight Hardware by Automating Drawing Ballooning and Inspection Characteristic Logging

Challenges

An aerospace manufacturer spent thousands of engineering hours manually ballooning drawings and copying hundreds of dimensions into FAI inspection sheets. Each manual transfer risked a transposition error. Because the FAI report gates flight hardware, slow preparation held parts back, and errors surfaced later as inspection findings with costly rework attached.
  • High Engineering Overhead : Engineers reviewed drawings and numbered every dimension by hand to prepare FAI packages. This repetitive work consumed engineering capacity and extended the time needed to make drawing packages inspection ready.
  • Complex Drawing Review : Multi page aerospace drawings carried a large number of dimensions, technical specifications and inspection characteristics, and each one had to be identified accurately. Engineers also had to keep every characteristic tied to its corresponding inspection record across the whole package.
  • High-Risk Transcription Errors : Transferring characteristics from drawings into inspection logs by hand created constant opportunities for transposition errors and inconsistencies. A single misread value or mismatched reference could reach the inspection sheet unnoticed.
  • Production Gate Bottlenecks : In flight hardware, the FAI report is a gate, not a formality. Lengthy preparation sat on the critical path and could hold back the movement of hardware into production, so every hour spent on documentation was an hour the part was not moving.
